SuperCivilization, The Second Axial Age and not-so-enlightened Despots1 comment

SuperCivilization is the term I use to describe the world that is developing out of the contemporary chaos of post-modernist society. We are witnessing the birth pangs of a new civilization.

Present day spiritual commentators are calling this time the Second Axial Age. This refers back to the Axial Age, which was the term Karl Jaspers (1949) used to describe the era that produced the great ancient religions, philosophies and codes of law in the middle of the first millennium BCE.

Those great developments were connected with the passing of tribal societies into civilized states, and the emerging problems of communication, individualism and legal structures.

I interpret current events in a reverse way;not as tribal societies passing into civilization, but rather as civilized societies passing into a higher form.

This will lead, I believe, to what Christians call the "Kingdom of Heaven", Marxists call Communism and I call SuperCivilization.  More >

 Diamond Numbers4 comments

If you square(n+1/2) it becomes n(n+1)+1/4 which can be useful in factorizing numbers. I call these numbers "Diamond Numbers" because n(n+1) is twice a triangular number and two triangles make a diamond.

Diamond numbers can be used in factorization as in the following example:
((5+1/2)-(3+1/2)) * ((5+1/2)+(3+1/2)) = 18

=(5+1/2)squared - (3+1/2)squared = (30+1/4) - (12 + 1/4) = 18 = 2*9

This simple method can be used on much larger numbers and could be part of Fermat's method of factorization based on difference of two squares.

 Dialectical analysis of Mathematics4 comments
category picture12 Jan 2016 @ 10:23

Seven years ago I wrote an article entitled "Fixing Cartesianism" in which I put forward views to counter the alienating tendencies of Descartes ideas.

This present article is a sequel and is slightly more ambitious.

In an old book I found a definition of mathematics which isn't used much these days, though to me it seems spot-on: "Mathematics is the science of continuous and discrete magnitude". This is a dialectical statement in that continuity and discontinuity are opposites.

Dialectics was all the rage two thousand years ago with Socrates and Plato and two hundred years ago with Hegel. It has fallen into disuse through its connection, in the public mind, with Marxism. I am one of those people who is trying to repopularize it.

Mathematics, in essence, consists of two complementary parts: Geometry and Algebra. Geometry is continuous (primarily) in that it deals with space, while Algebra is discontinuous (primarily) as it deals with knowns and unknowns, sums and differences, which are discrete. In this respect Algebra is connected to Time, which is also primarily discontinuous.

If we look at their secondary aspects however, we see the opposite. Geometry contains discontinuities such as infinities and singularities, which some think are connected to Black Holes. Algebra, in its secondary aspect, is continuous, and can be used as in co-ordinate geometry, to represent geometrical figures.

In truth everything is both continuous and discontinuous, a famous example of this is Light, which is a wave (continuous) and also a particle (discontinuous).

In my previous article I argued that Cartesianism could be fixed by using some of the mathematical forms and tools of Chaos theory, such as maps and iteration.

It is my opinion that the spacetime continuum, based as it is on 4 dimensional Cartesian geometry, ignores discontinuities, and needs updating to include a more dialectical view.

Infinities and singularities may yet prove to be very important.  More >

Civilization & Alienation: A very short Introduction2 comments
category picture27 Jul 2015 @ 10:38

1) Alienation is separation, in the sense of dis-connection. We are separated from God, from nature, from ourselves, from men and from women.

2) When we are separated from something, it leads us to dominate or be dominated by it. This causes nearly everything to be out of balance. The Yin and Yang are out of balance in civilization, which is vastly over-Yang.

3) This alienation, separation and dis-connection leads to the evils of slavery and exploitation, sexism, homophobia, racism, abuse of the natural world and mental illness.

4)Civilization is based on this imbalance of Yin and Yang, this alienation and domination.

5)History is the process of humanity working through these forms of domination in a struggle for freedom, and an overcoming of all alienation. This will lead to what mystics call Cosmic Consciousness, or universal enlightenment.

6) The next stage in this process is a spiritual evolution/revolution in the realm of consciousness and will involve the media. Already civilization is in a phase of transition to what I call supercivilization, and the imbalance between Yin and Yang is visibly reducing.  More >

Laws of Karma, Dialectics and Newton3 comments
category picture8 Jul 2015 @ 14:28

Karma is action and the law of Karma states that what you do will be done back to you.

The law of Dialectics is similar to this and says that what happens has a reaction which is opposite to it.

Both of these laws are contained in Newton's law of motion that every physical action has an equal and opposite reaction to it.  More >

What's coming is essentially a spiritual evolution/revolution. It may be accompanied by changes on other levels such as social, economic, political etc. and will lead to what Hegel termed "Absolute Spirit" and Edward Carpenter "Cosmic Consciousness". It will be, in other words, Universal Enlightenment.

All religions point to this culmination and triumph of spirit, and we can now see that it is on its way.  More >

The Media Class and Information Capital5 comments
category picture7 Jun 2015 @ 13:08

There is a new class active on the world stage. It is international and global in
nature. It is the media class. The fourth estate was a term previously applied to the media, but now it has become a fully-fledged class that is changing, on a daily basis, the world we live in. Like rising classes generally, it is progressive, particularly in authoritarian countries. But there are some worrying facets to it, and it is becoming over-Yang, as witnessed in this country by recent scandals involving hacking and bullying.

The rise of this class is accompanied by the development of a new form of capital, which I term Information Capital. Information is a commodity and it has less constraints on it than other commodities, which are mainly material. Information Capital can increase potentially without limit. The form of capital which has predominated for the past century, Finance Capital, is in decline and the new Information Capital is on the rise.  More >
