NCN World Poet Tree: A Birthday Poem

The cards assail you...

The cards assail you and friends pester you
For an evening of muscatel and cakes.
Gifts in red, blue, brittle packaging
Choke the beleaguered mantelpiece
As the fresh-fledged day unfurls her wings
Rekindling the candles of extinguished memories.

But beneath the tinsel and confetti,
Beneath the thin crust of sugary icing
Things remain much the same:
Only the wounds gape wider
The shadows loom ghostlier
And the day appears suddener.

what? another year has passed?
confetti gets thrown from an old recipe
sugar melts the season
candles blow from their own inner breath

who am i? another layer stripped
a being closer to the babe i once was
i approach a day when i was most promising
i promise myself to look this year in the eye

Thanks Judih for the little epilogue. I quite like it!
