|New Civilization News: Let Kids be Kids!!!|
Category: Children, Parenting
14 comments8 Sep 2007 @ 17:17 by a-d : Thank you Jerry,
for speaking up for Children! It is HIGH Time, that Grown Ups wake up and start taking the Bull by the horn..... how about remembering how WE once were kids and how WE were tampered with, dehumanized and denied!
I've been wondering about this very topic for quite some time (our wonderful dialogues -of course- brought this thought to me -together with Miguel Ruiz Insights about "The Domestication Process"! AND for one more IMPORTANT Factor: I am one of those rare individuals who NEVER forgot having been a kid and I ALWAYS -DAILY- related all Things to THAT Me, inside of me, to the socially adjusted,"grown up" me, which always was so difficult!...But I worked hard on it , denying my own true Spirit as much as I could without totally killing that part, but, I kept her so quiet that she didn't have a chance to rebel too loud... only I could hear her -daily! I really didn't see myself as Grown Up the way so many other seemed to do. ) )Here, we have the entire "what's wrong with humanity?" - question: WHY in the world do we always choose to destroy the Next Generation; our own offspring!??? How hard can it be to remember what evil was done to US intentional/ly or not -does it matter???? A slap in my face is a slap in my face; be it intentional or not! A bullet to my head (or Heart, so to speak )is a bullet to my head/Heart -intentional or not!!!))
Do we really want to do the same evil to OUR children???? The answer has been for thousands of generations "Yes", why not, I came out OK. There's nothing wrong with how I came out!.... Or... is there???...." Oh, yes, is the answer to that one!
Time to break the vicious circle. Now finally, thanks to the Net, we know we are not alone in feeling this way and seeing the real urgency in this Life or death course of Events as it were -or more straight to the point: in dealing with each other. Children are -after all- humans -only born a different year than us (grown ups!...What a weird concept that is anyway. eh? ) they will soon be grown ups -a different year. That's all!.... WHY not give them the respect we demand for ourselves????
This whole diagnostic thing -to justify evil and drugging...well...you know my view on that already, so.... Life is all about how we relate to each other/to life outside our own skin!
Thanks, Jerry, for taking on the Goliath!
8 Sep 2007 @ 18:01 by jerryvest : Thanks for your support and comments,
a-d. I suppose that I may sound like a broken record, going around and around on these issues. I have forwarded these messages to collegues and posted them on my professional forums, but few respond. I can't decide if no one cares, feel hopeless, not concerned, or all of the above.
I am going to post this on a teacher's forum to see what kind of response I get there.
You are the best!!! Thanks for staying-in-touch.
12 Sep 2007 @ 22:13 by jerryvest : A-D, I love that you have sustained and
preserved your inner child and youthful spirit. I believe that this is why we can relate to one another and with children so well. I feel that as we begin to see how our past has produced our uncompromising, rigid and inflexible egos, (Ichazo describes this manifestation as our Historical Ego), we can begin to allow 'it' to relax and to transform itself into our natural being or child that knows how to come out to relate and to play with others. Anyway, this discussion fits with the labels that psychiatry and psychology create to assess or diagnose their patients(customers). I have observed over the many years of direct practice that placing these labels on top of the ego only make change or transformation more difficult, especially since the spirit or essence is real, genuine, eternal while the label/ADHD is fabricated, disrespectful and judgmental. It's no wonder that there are no cures in clinical psychiatry, only some short-term relief for the symptoms.
I think that people who are suffering and need temporary relief should receive healthy interventions by a professional. However, the patient/client should be offered several integrative health options--exercise, massage/touch, meditation, breathing awareness, and mindfulness training. My students and clients are given the opportunity to design their daily health plans that include their whole being--physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. They take responsibility for their life, health and relationships.
Thanks again, A-D. I really appreciate your thoughtful, playful and wise comments.
13 Sep 2007 @ 00:59 by a-d : Wow... a lot of stimuli here! : )
I do want to respond to your sweet, loving comment here ( though officially it does not ask for response -but You know already how bad I perform the "Official", eh? : )
I personally think the BIG mistake comes from us seeing the "Historical Ego" as something Life made as our Divine Make-Up. I do NOT believe that to be case at all..... They are not to mixed and seen as "the same"; our OWN Life-made Essence, which -as you said- IS genuine, eternal, kind, sharing and co-operative/SYMBIOTIC TO ALL LIFE in Its (God-given) Nature & State(-of-being). So right here we do have a major contradiction to overcome in our Understanding!...
Secondly; it is hard for Humanity to accept the Truth that our so called establishment is NOT of the Highest and most refined and other similar flattering superlatives, but the OPPOSITE; representing the LOWEST of vibrations/ways of living, causing a HUGE WOUND in our Divinity/Cosmic/ness.
" The Highest among you will be lowest and the lowest among you will be the Highest".... a famous prophetic statement, by the One & Only, who had the Presence of Mind & Love enough to do what none of us can (still today)
Thirdly; this sad state of affairs, is -as we both know- a result of humanity having been seduced to treat each new generation (their own children) with an unbelievable cruelty causing a very infectious ignorance, epidemic in nature (any kind of Emotional/Mental States are very infectious, as you very well know) to satisfy the most wounded ones, who always have chosen to take on "establishment positions" where they under the guise of pretending to care, were able to freely suck life energy from the rest of humanity. But in reality it was all nothing but deception, cruelty. This BOIL on their -as well as on the collective- Psyche is in the midst of the bursting process and has indeed started already to empty itself! (which is a very good thing!... )
Today we are seeing more and more exactly what kind of lies the originally sick ones dreamt up and have been keeping up! Just look at the System!
But all these years up to this cleansing of the old , it has been very hard -for many reasons- for PARENTS to admit that they did not understand how to bring a new human(their newborn) to safely grow from babyhood to COSMIC Maturity! The Parents themselves were treated wrong!... and infintum. No need to point finger to any given moment in History... just recognize the pattern and let go AND say : "NO MORE of that!" which indeed is happening all over the Planet!
Humanity desperately needs people like you who are willing to Do The Job, Do the Job, Do the Job!...
No Jerry, you don't sound like a broken record! Mankind needs this record to play till ALL -or at least enough have heard it to get the Critical Mass (Transference) to occur!
Your students & clients now being so lucky to be able to receive something GOOD & Life-affirming they never got before, will go with this new received gift to their every-day-life and share of it other people!
This IS how Goodness,Love; Enlightenment, spreads!!
In the next few days, I will post two articles -though being VERY different from each other, they both relate very well to this subject: what we need to do in order to be/come decent = COSMIC humans again) -with a little imagination, maybe... You'll let me know, eh? : )
BTW; Thank you so much for this: "The natural state of the mind is void." (Oscar Ichazo) (you have no idea how much this means to me! Forever grateful! : ) )
Stay Warm. Stay Cool! : )

7 Oct 2007 @ 20:01 by from experience @18.104.22.168 : what is the greatest myth and fraud
What I find is the Biggest Scam which creates harm to the Individuals that HAVE ADHD, Includng the ADULTS - (not only children have it) is that people ignore the fact that Today the ADHD is considered one of the best researched disorders in American History and the overall data on its validity are far more compelling than for most mental disorders and even many medical conditions," according to the American Medical Association Council on Scientific Affairs.
Please let us not forget that Dr. Baughman RETIRED in 1993, he was a CHILD Neurologist - so much advances have occured not only in Science but technology, that allows us to be able to learn more about it.
Now, correct me if I am wrong, but has Dr Baughman been PERTSONALLY involved in ANY randomized controlled scientific meta studies, clinical trials or research, based upon ADHD? In Any studies that have been acknowledged by the Medical boards? Especially in the past 10 Years, with the advancements of science and technology? And especially with Adults who have the disorder.. ADULTS who can articulate, and express their experiences better than children! Adults who can express their considerable frustrations and pain dealing with Untreated ADHD?
Dr. Baughman is also cited in saying that not only is ADHD fraud, but so is OCD, depression, Anxiety.
Noted Quote -
Although he is frequently cited by CCHR and has written articles in support of Applied Scholastics, Dr. Baughman is generally regarded as an unrepresentative and ill-informed voice on learning disabilities. The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) told the Congressional Committee on Education and the Workforce in a letter of September 29, 2000 that Dr. Baughman "represent[s] fringe opinions about the disorder and about psychiatry." His position is certainly at odds with mainstream research and ignores the findings of a huge amount of research from around the world.
Yes, indeed, the biggest fraud are articles and the individuals who really havent invested the time researching the disorder with individuals (ADULT) individuals who suffer from it day to day.. and whom can share their Life Experience.
That indeed is a disservice to the public
He has been noted to say that scientific research has yet to prove him wrong.. i say that the Complete OPPOSITE is true.
8 Oct 2007 @ 02:23 by jerryvest : Thank you for your message...I don't
know what to believe about the classification of people, giving them a number and sending them to the pharmacy and providing occassional therapy sessions. What I suggest is that social workers need not give labels. We do not have to receive lobbyists for the drug industry to promote their products.
I think we will have to make up our own minds about this mental health industry and I am hopeful that they will examine alternatives to this current drugging of America. Humanity is suffering and I'm hopeful that some creative solutions will come soon.
Thanks for visiting my log.
Will you post a link to the "American Medical Association Council on Scientific Affairs" positive reports related to ADHD? Thank you.
13 Nov 2007 @ 13:48 by jerryvest : Beware of ADHD Labels with kids...
I think that the closing remarks on this article is the key to doing assessments with kids. And, as I pointed out in my articles, kids should not be diagnosed with disorders without more science--this ADHD phenomenen is really still a scam in my estimation.
"Doctors cannot diagnose attention deficit or any other psychiatric disorder with imaging technology, in part because brains vary so much that a single series of images can seldom reveal who has a disorder. The new findings suggest that searching for a clear abnormality or flaw is the wrong approach, at least for attention problems."
“The basic sequence of development in the brains of these kids with A.D.H.D. was intact, absolutely normal,” Dr. Shaw said. “I think this is pretty strong evidence we’re talking about a delay, and not an abnormal brain.”
"About three in four children do grow out of the problem by early adulthood, he said.)
Bad Behavior Does Not Doom Pupils, Studies Say
By BENEDICT CAREY
Published: November 13, 2007
Educators and psychologists have long feared that children entering school with behavior problems were doomed to fall behind in the upper grades. But two new studies suggest that those fears are exaggerated.
One concluded that kindergartners who are identified as troubled do as well academically as their peers in elementary school. The other found that children with attention deficit disorders suffer primarily from a delay in brain development, not from a deficit or flaw.
Experts say the findings of the two studies, being published today in separate journals, could change the way scientists, teachers and parents understand and manage children who are disruptive or emotionally withdrawn in the early years of school. The studies might even prompt a reassessment of the possible causes of disruptive behavior in some children.
“I think these may become landmark findings, forcing us to ask whether these acting-out kinds of problems are secondary to the inappropriate maturity expectations that some educators place on young children as soon as they enter classrooms,” said Sharon Landesman Ramey, director of the Georgetown University Center on Health and Education, who was not connected with either study.
In one study, an international team of researchers analyzed measures of social and intellectual development from over 16,000 children and found that disruptive or antisocial behaviors in kindergarten did not correlate with academic results at the end of elementary school.
Kindergartners who interrupted the teacher, defied instructions and even picked fights were performing as well in reading and math as well-behaved children of the same abilities when they both reached fifth grade, the study found.
Other researchers cautioned that the findings, being reported in the journal Developmental Psychology, did not imply that emotional problems were trivial or could not derail academic success in the years before or after elementary school.
In the other study, researchers from the National Institute of Mental Health and McGill University, using imaging techniques, found that the brains of children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder developed normally but more slowly in some areas than the brains of children without the disorder.
The disorder, also known as A.D.H.D., is by far the most common psychiatric diagnosis given to disruptive young children; 3 percent to 5 percent of school-age children are thought to be affected. Researchers have long debated whether it was due to a brain deficit or to a delay in development.
Doctors said that the report, being published in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, helps to explain why so many children grow out of the diagnosis in middle school or later, often after taking stimulant medications to improve concentration in earlier grades.
The findings in the first study grew out of a collaboration among a dozen leading researchers to reassess data from six large child-development studies performed since 1970. Each of these six studies tracked hundreds of children from an early age through elementary school on a number of measures, including reading and math skills, emotional stability and concentration, or attention. Most of the studies used teacher reports to gauge students’ emotional and social progress and their ability to pay attention when asked.
The researchers adjusted the findings to eliminate the influence of factors like family income and family structure.
While there was little correlation between behavior problems in kindergarten and later academic success, the researchers did find that scores on math tests at ages 5 or 6 were highly correlated with academic success in fifth grade. Kindergarten reading skills and scores on attention measures — where youngsters with A.D.H.D. falter — also predicted later academic success, but less strongly than math scores did. The pattern was about the same in girls as in boys, and for children from affluent families as well as those from lower-income groups.
The authors of the study suggested that preschool programs might consider developing more effective math training. The findings should also put to rest concerns that boys and girls who are restless, disruptive or withdrawn in kindergarten are bound to suffer academically.
“For kindergarten, it appears teachers are able to work around these behavior problems in a way that enables kids to learn just as much as other kids with equal levels of ability,” said the lead author, Greg J. Duncan, a professor of human development and social policy at Northwestern University.
The findings, Dr. Duncan said, have been “very controversial among developmental psychologists who have seen the paper.”
One who is concerned, Ross Thompson, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Davis, said it would be a mistake to conclude from the results that programs to guide preschoolers’ emotional development were not helpful.
“That would be a double whammy for really difficult kids,” Dr. Thompson said, “to have no help managing their behavior and then — wham! — to get labeled as problem kids as soon as they enter school.”
In the second study, government psychiatric researchers compared brain scans from two groups of children: one with attention deficit disorder, the other without. The scientists had tracked the children — 223 in each group — from ages 6 to 16, taking multiple scans on each child.
In a normally developing brain, the cerebral cortex — the outer wrapping, where circuits involved in conscious thought are concentrated — thickens during early childhood. It then reverses course and thins out, losing neurons as the brain matures through adolescence. The study found that, on average, the brains of children with A.D.H.D. began this “pruning” process at age 10 ½, about three years later than their peers.
About 80 percent of those with attention problems were taking or had taken stimulant drugs, and the researchers did not know the effect of the medications on brain development. Doctors consider stimulant drugs a reliable way to improve attention in the short term; the new study is not likely to change that attitude.
But the greatest delays in brain maturation were found in precisely those areas of the cortex most involved in attention and motor control, said the lead author of the study, Dr. Philip Shaw, a psychiatrist at the National Institute of Mental Health.
“Those are exactly the areas where we would expect to find differences,” Dr. Shaw said.
Doctors cannot diagnose attention deficit or any other psychiatric disorder with imaging technology, in part because brains vary so much that a single series of images can seldom reveal who has a disorder. The new findings suggest that searching for a clear abnormality or flaw is the wrong approach, at least for attention problems.
“The basic sequence of development in the brains of these kids with A.D.H.D. was intact, absolutely normal,” Dr. Shaw said. “I think this is pretty strong evidence we’re talking about a delay, and not an abnormal brain.”
About three in four children do grow out of the problem by early adulthood, he said.

Thanks, Dawn. See, that's the thing. A person relaly doesn't have ADD it's not a germ or disease. It's basically a label given to a set of behaviors such as high energy, lots of movement, interested in many things, etc that don't fit very well in a regular classroom. In fact, the Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders lists it as a disorder, and most of the description has to do with classroom behaviors. Basically, it's a disorder of not conforming to a classroom!

Hey Dr. K I am a 47 y.o diagnosed with ADHD 2 yrs ago. This dgionasis followed my 35 day stint in rehab for an opiate addiction. What I have had difficulties with ALL my life is relationships. The difficulty .they NEVER last more than 5 years. In fact, my Mom asked about my 5 year plan with my current love. Very discouraging. This relationship WILL last as I am working very hard at figuring out my self . So, in answer to your question you are helping me in the relationship area. As a side note: I was being treated with Concerta, however the nursing regulatory body considers that a relapse and I am now off it. Even though my contract states that medications prescribed by a physician aware of your addiction will be allowed My family doc diagnosed the ADHD, however he called my addiction doc to discuss treatment. Together they both decided the best treatment would be Concerta. The doctor the nursing body has appointed to monitor me is the doctor that prescribed it. My license was again suspended. So unfair .anyway I can REALLY tell the difference. I am a mess. Any suggestions? I may just have to go back on it. I am not nursing right now anyway.

Hi Dr. Kenny! Very late b-day wish at this point but I just signed up! I hope you had a great bthirday! My husband and I are watching your DVDs of Medication Mastery and it has helped increase our understanding of ADHD medications immensely! We have a child with ADHD, probable Aspergers, and anxiety. He has also had traumatic events in his young life, and has been seeing a therapist on and off for a few years. We felt so overwhelmed with what to treat first, how to treat, and the scary media coverage of treatments. But we're completing module #6 right now, and I feel much more confident!Do you ever have online Q&A's? We'd be interested in asking a few questions, but are not in your area, and can't find a list for child psychiatrists. Maybe we'll see you yet! All the best! http://wbjafwuwtl.com nyzcepxh [link=http://tgsmsqjilu.com]tgsmsqjilu[/link]
