The Skeleton Crew

The Skeleton Crew

A weary crew worked the Northern Mine
From day and night ; from Nine to Nine.
Working the darkest, deepest, hard-hewn hole
Loading that blackened rock called coal

They descended each shift with haggard faces
Into the earthen bowels and curs-ed spaces
Rising exhausted at the change of shift
Clanking to the surface in a flimsy lift

A rumbling shook the mine down below
Breaking the lift they lost every soul
Thirteen went to their death that night
Though rescuers tried with all their might

They went down with pulleys and ropes
The whole town full of prayers and hopes
But deep water filled the Northern Mine
So they covered it up; made it a shrine

The deep water flows to the lake nearby
If you listen at night, you can hear them cry
The water remembers those souls so lost
Skeletons into the dead waters tossed

I saw them myself and I heard them scream
For a moment I thought it was an evil dream
The water was black like the coal they drilled
Reliving the moment when they were killed.

Looking into the water they beckoned me
With hollowed eyes and arms did plea
A bony hand reached from up the deep
I recoiled and fled as I heard them weep

Never will I venture to that lake at night
I may not recover from such a terrible fright
For each night I hear their horrible screams
Haunted forever by their skeleton dreams.
